Soup is not good for living things
\nMy friend is a turtle
\nHer home goes about with her, and when she sleeps, she pulls herself into it and shuts all the holes
\nCurled into her shell with a carefully curated and maintained selection of belongings, she has just enough room to worry
\nMost of the amenities and necessities of life are not accessible to turtles... turtles can't have addresses or doctors or rights, or even get a pizza delivered when they hurt too much to cook after swimming against the tide all day
\nStorms toss her shell about, or flood it, or cover it with snow... weather prep, mitigation, and remediation are as much a part of every day as breathing... and every storm carries the cumulative threats of all the storms before and yet to come
\nThe frogs in the pot cause more damage than storms... gatekeepers and stormtroopers who jump to conclusions, and others who think turtles are invasive growths to be pushed under water, or stones for shitting on... self appointed covert vigilantes for a status quo that never really existed, green with envy for the turtles' freedom in spite of the price
\nThey don't understand that only ungaranteed circumstances separate them, nor that anyone could suddenly become a turtle if their swamp is swapped for a shell... and they don't understand the dams that trap the turtles will open wider to swallow other game when turtles are extinct
\nThey make turtle soup and carve excuses from the shells as the tide and the temperature rise around them
\nAnd my friend sighs and tidies her shell and keeps looking for a place without soup on the menu
